Popularity is more priceless.
Consider the amount of money actually recieved from the webcomics, not a whole lot. By releasing more free, you get more traffic, fueling the site more.
Besides, what's stoping people from downloading it for free? Tis a shame.
But by releasing comics for free, gives more people insentive to buy them.
And gearing up for bigger releases.
